Female Bird Photo Challenge

1 - 30 September, 2023

Birdwatching is an endeavor that invites us into a world of unparalleled diversity and wonder. Yet, a closer examination reveals a gap in this tapestry. While male birds are frequently documented and celebrated in field guides and apps, including Bïndo's own platform, their female counterparts remain notably underrepresented. This absence is not just an oversight—it’s a missed opportunity to delve into the unique attributes and important roles of female birds.

Furthermore, the paucity of images and information about female birds adds an extra layer of complexity when it comes to identifying them. Many female birds possess subtle but distinctive features that are crucial for species identification, yet these are often poorly documented. The challenge is greater but so is the reward of successfully telling these magnificent creatures apart.

Introducing the Bïndo Female Bird Photo Challenge

We aim to correct this imbalance. Join us as we turn the spotlight squarely onto the often-overlooked females of the avian world, emphasising their unique characteristics and essential roles within their ecosystems.

How to Participate
  1. Download the Bïndo Birding App: If you haven't yet become a part of our bird-loving community, now is the perfect time. iOS and available on Android
  2. Capture the Moment: Focus your lens on female birds. Pay special attention to the unique features that differentiate them from their male counterparts, as well as from females of other species.
  3. Submit via Bïndo: Log your sighting and attach your photograph within the app.
  4. Spread the Word: Share your discovery on social media and encourage others to contribute their own observations and photographs.

Why This Matters

The lack of representation for female birds has real-world implications. For the casual birdwatcher or the serious ornithologist, the absence of comprehensive data on female birds can make accurate identification a daunting task. By directing our focus toward these less-documented birds, we not only correct a historical imbalance but also make strides in scientific understanding and appreciation of avian diversity.

Join us in this transformative effort. Together, let's enrich the annals of ornithology, challenge our observational skills, and celebrate the lesser-seen but equally remarkable females of the bird kingdom.
