Mike Buckham and David Winter chat with Dr. Guy Balme in the Shed about the birding sprint that took him to 600 species in the 2024 Spring Challenge. In one remarkable six day run towards the end of the challenge he added almost 450 species. A huge effort also included a pelagic style kayak mission 20 km off Cape Point.

Guy's never been one for competitive birding, particularly when you put him next to someone like Mike. But what he achieved was absolutely mental, one of the most committed birding efforts you'll ever hear about. We dig into how Guy used the Bïndo app's nearby targets feature, which draws on SABAP2 data to show species you're likely to find in specific areas. He also made clever use of precise location pins dropped by other birders, helping him track down some seriously elusive species during his sweep.

Dr. Guy Balme is a conservation scientist and executive director at Panthera, a global wild cat conservation organisation, and a leading expert on leopards and other large carnivores.
