There is no need to sign up— add your bird sightings and atlas cards in Bindo and you will be automatically entered.

The challenge begins on Tuesday, 1 September at one second past midnight and runs until midnight on 30 November. The rules couldn’t be simpler: log any bird species you positively identify, by sight or sound, on the app.

If you record 100 species or more, you’ll qualify for the draw for our binocular prize — a pair of Swarovski CL Companion 8 x 30s.

The All-New Sony Photographic Competition

We’re also thrilled to welcome Orms and Sony as major sponsors, with a generous prize of a Sony RX10 camera valued at R50,000.

We'll shortlist the best images and let the Bindo community choose the winner through an online vote as soon as the Challenge ends. Most votes wins the camera.  As simple as that!

Just keep adding photos to your sightings for a chance to make the shortlist.

A quick note on the photo competition: we’re looking for genuine photographic skill, not AI wizardry. Shortlisted photographers will be asked for their original RAW or JPEG files. Light edits are fine, but heavily altered images will be removed. Judges’ decisions are final.

We’ll also be giving away a pair of Ballo Sunglasses to the birder with the highest species count, always one of the most closely watched parts of the competition.

Who will take the Provincial Crown?

And don’t forget the provincial rivalry. The Western Cape usually dominates total sightings, but KwaZulu‑Natal, Mpumalanga and Limpopo are always in the hunt for highest provincial species count. It’s tight every year, and we expect nothing different this time.

Milestones will be reached and records will be broken

We’re hoping for some big milestones this year: another total sightings record, another breach of the 800‑species barrier, and perhaps the highest number of participants yet. All of that depends on you, our Bindo community, getting out there and logging birds wherever you are. Tag us in your favourite moments with @bindobirding.
